Shardale Therapeutic Community is located in Bury Greater Manchester and provides alcohol rehab for the effective treatment of alcohol addiction. Our clients are referred by social services departments in local councils such as Bury, Manchester, Lancashire and Wyre Councils but we also accept self funding users. As well as residential alcohol rehabilitation, Shardale has day care facilities for up to twelve individuals.
Treatment provision is predominantly for alcohol addiction, however, service users with secondary substance misuse, along with addiction to alcohol, will be assessed on an individual basis, and treatment can be tailored to individual need. The Alcohol rehab centre has a secure female wing which has the ability to cater for five female service users.
At Shardale, we do not refer to people as ‘alcoholics’, nor do we subscribe to the belief that dependent people have a disease known as ‘alcoholism’. We feel that this view of labelling people as sick is not only totally disempowering but also relieves that person of the full responsibility for their behaviour – behaviour that we maintain is always chosen. What we do believe, is that many people behave in irresponsible and misguided ways in attempts to meet their needs, and that these can result in harm being done to all aspects of their lives, their relationships, and to other people’s lives too.
